The Land Rover Discovery is between the much more expensive Range Rover and the more industrial type workhorse, the Defender. With prices starting at £31,995 the price range also fits between its brother and sister.

With the government favouring smaller cars that are better for the environment and ever increasing fuel prices vehicles like the Discovery are getting harder to run. However if you are looking for a great off roader that is comfortable to run the whole family around in, there is no better vehicle in the market.

It has an incredible 1500 hours of battery life which surpasses competitors by 10 fold. Its not surprisingly wind and water proof and has been even crushed by an elephant in testing. It has an extra loud ring tone so when you are under fire you will be able to hear it. Other features include an FM radio, GPS, 2MP camera and the powerful Java platform for applications.

Its being sold by supermarket giant tesco for around £250. A small price to pay for the worlds toughest mobile phone.

There are 3 differing models a 90 soft top and 90 and 110 hardtop models. The softtop being the first of its kind to be sold in the UK for 20 years.

In addition the SVX features satin black body wrap 60th decals, diamond turned five-spoke alloy wheels, tubular side-steps, reinforced aluminium front under shield, sunroof, heated seats, aluminum gear knob, and a Clarion audio system with sub woofer and amplifier.

All models have a plaque with model number engraved on it. The soft top model ( as shown below ) has a tubular frame cover attachment. They also all have an ipod dock, which can be played through the Clarion stereo with sub woofer. Reports do say that you hear very little else but outside noise when travelling at motoring speed.

At £30,495 its a reasonable deal for a Land Rover that will become a collectors item in a few years.

Sales in October were down to 1283 units compared to over 3000 in the same month in 2007. The decline has to do with the current financial slump but is the Discovery 3 worth buying or not?

Driving Experience

The driving experience either off road and on can only be described as fantastic. The user customized condition mode changes the vehicles settings to suit. Although many Discovery’s arent used in the mud and country conditions its well worth the effort in finding somewhere. Anti lock brakes and traction control come as standard and really help the vehicles handling. The 187 bhp engine gets the car to 60 in a very respectable 11 seconds.

Interior

The interior is extremely well crafted and up to 7 bodies are well catered for. The 2 seats at the rear of the machine are tight yet comfortable. That iss up a few marks from previous models which could be described as uncomfortable. There are 8 air bags to protect the passengers from harm in an unlikely crash.

Pricing

The pricing for the Discovery 3 starts at 29,950 going up to  £45,360 for a fully kitted out leather with other options such as metallic paint. Its not cheap but its a quality vehicle and in the luxury 4×4 market its the best in its class.

The car is driven by Miss fields then the man of the moment himself, Daniel Craig. The film has just broke the US box office record. Other cars in Quantum of Solace include the Aston Martin DBS, the Alfa Romeo 159 and Jaguar Daimler Double-Six.

The Range Rover Sport isnt just a Range Rover with a powerful engine, its a whole new car thats based on the Discovery rather than the original luxury off road machine. The Range Rover sport is a luxury car that many film stars and celebritys own and certainly doesnt look out of place in the new James Bond film.

Pricing hasnt been released yet but estimates say in the region of around the four figure mark.

It even features front and back parking cameras, 22 inch deep alloy wheels and new spoilers

West Berkshire police chief, Supt Robin Rickard, said: “The majority of these vehicles were stolen from rural areas.”
“We believe that they are being stripped, with the parts being sold on and the bodies sold for scrap.”
He added: “I would urge anyone who owns a similar vehicle to be aware of this potential threat, especially those with older Land Rovers which do not have some of the more modern safety features.”

With the rise in scrap metal prices, it seems that our pride and joys are a real threat. It also seems that most of thefts have taken place in rural areas.

Make sure you have locked all the doors and if possible store your vehicles in secure areas like a garage.
